Bigger Picture

poem by Ken Holmes, Summer Solstice 2011

The bigger picture needs no painting
The eyes just need to leave the smaller canvas
As the mind casts off the lesser focus

She planted forget-me-nots
In our garden before she died
Off to the bigger garden of forget-the-lot

I remember fighting you
Words wrestling for power and supremacy
Until I filed you in eternity
With all the others

And you, I loved so dearly
Until you too disappeared into the ocean
Of the other lovers, brothers, sisters, mothers

That now are cherished so sincerely

Mastering the ideas
Sitting, sitting, sitting,
So many things seemed important

at the time

Now all gone
Flitting, flitting, flitting
Dharma mists

The bigger picture needs no painting
Lucid eyes just dispossess the smaller canvas
As the mind casts off every focus
